Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do you need?

The band performs comfortably in a space of approximately 5x3metres, although we can cater for tighter spaces if needed so do not hesitate to get in touch.  Vocals with backing track, DJ hire or duo set ups can fit into a smaller space of approximately 2x2meters.

How is it best to time things?

We are happy to accommodate timings to suit your special event.  Timings will also depend on what you require and when.  For example a solo vocalist with guitar for a Wedding Breakfast will probably do two sets of 45 minutes with a 30-minute break during speeches.   However, the band playing for the evening event may play two sets of 1hour with DJ sets in between - factors such as food, buffets and speeches will affect timings, however we can discuss all of the options to ensure your event is a success.

Can I pick the playlist?

You can pick a selection of songs that you particularly like or don't like to support our playlists for your event, however I would recommend that you allow us control over the order that songs are played and allow us to follow a set that suits the guests.  We will endeavor to read the guests to establish what songs would be best played next, for example when to keep things lively and when to slow the mood.  We are happy to learn first dance songs or specific requests when presented with enough time to do so.  Please refer to the repertoire list for live music.  As a DJ I can organize any song that your guests request prior to and on the night of the event.

Where will you travel to?

As a DJ and Soloist I am based in Essex, as are the band members and we generally work in Essex, London or the counties.  However, do not hesitate to get in touch as we may be able to cater for your event even if it is beyond our usual area.

Can I see you play live?

The majority of my work is private functions and access can prove difficult, however I do play publically on occasion. Feel free to explore gig list on my home page to find an event you may be able to attend or contact me directly for further information via lucy@costello.me.uk

How do I book you?

You can book me through the online booking link above, you can call me on 07921229805 or email lucy@costello.me.uk.   Alternatively you can use the contact page above to find out more information.

Are you able to DJ in between sets?

As a DJ I am able to provide a full DJ service for your event, independent of any live music, if required.  Music playlists between sets comes as standard with every live music booking (soloist, duo, band).  If you want a more bespoke DJ service alongside the Live Music, we offer a DJ package upgrade option where requests can be taken between sets and a DJ can be provided for the duration of your event after the live music has finished.

Can we use your sound system for speeches?

You are welcome to use our PA system for your speeches. However, we don’t use radio mics in our live setup so should you need them please let me know in advance of you event (this may cost a hire fee).

What equipment do you use?

Bose L1 Model II stereo set up with a Yamaha 16 channel mixer.  Shure microphones, MacBook Pro, and various instruments depending on the set up you require.  For more information on the musicians I use and their instruments please click on the Musicians link above.

Do you have lights?

I am equipped with a light set up that includes…  If you require a more detailed set up including uplighters, smoke machine, etc. do get in touch as I work closely with a hire company that will offer discounted rates to my customers.

How long do you play for?

DJ – A usual DJ set will last 5 hours.

All live music will usually be arranged into two one-hour sets. This can also be divided into three 40-minute sets if you prefer. We can also offer an acoustic option, which consists of 2 x 30 minutes of carefully selected acoustic music, perfect for during your meal or drinks reception. We can provide this service either with backing tracks, vocals and keyboard or vocals and guitar.

What time do you start and finish?

I am happy to accommodate start and finish times for your event.

How long do you take to set up?

For DJ only set up is around 30minutes although I will always aim to be there in good time to ensure that set up is complete before your guests arrive.  For Live Music such as Soloist and backing track/guitar/keyboard or the Band and assuming access to the venue is straight forward then we can normally be set up and sound checked in an hour.

Can I provisionally book you?

Unfortunately, I can only accept confirmed bookings. However, when you make an official enquiry, I will take a note of this and you will be given first refusal on your date should anybody else enquire for the same date.

What if the band split up before my event?

Working with a number of musicians does give us flexibility with what we can offer.  However, in the very unlikely event that the band had split up before your party, every effort would be made to find a suitable replacement band.  Rest assured that should I fall ill and am meant to be DJing your event or singing solo that I have a number of acts I work with closely who could fill in.  Any changes prior to the event would be discussed with you first.

Can my sisters/bosses/daughters dog sing with your band?

I am more than happy to have guest singers up on stage with me, however I would advise that we arrange this in advance of your event to ensure that those singing have some experience and know the songs well.  I would advise against impromptu performances on the day/night of the event as this can run the risk of turning the night into a karaoke session!

What will you/the band wear?

I/We usually dress formally for most parties (dress/trousers, shirt and tie) unless informal attire is requested. In the past, we’ve also been asked to join in with an events theme, which we are more than happy to accommodate where possible.

Do you have PAT and PLI certificates?

I always carry up to date PAT certification and have Public Liability Insurance cover up to £5M.

How much does it cost to book the band?

Cost does vary based on the location of your event, timings, which acts you want performing (DJ, soloist, duo or full band) and any additional options you may want to add (lighting, etc.).  Please see our package deals via the BOOK ONLINE tab above for a good idea of what different options will cost.

Can we see some previous client testimonials?

Please review to my TESTIMONIALS page for client testimonials.

Do you have any specific requirements?

A space to change is always useful.  If hired for a full evening or full day event, such as a Wedding, we would also appreciate something to eat and drinks for the duration of our time at the venue.

What type/size venues are you able to play at?

My own PA system can comfortable handle a 500 guest venue.  However if your event or venue has built in PA then there is no limit to the size or type of venue I can play.

How loud will you be?

I will always endeavor to ensure that the volume is kept to a comfortable level – should it be intended for background music during drinks receptions or dance floor fillers during the evening.  We can accommodate the sound to suit your event.

What is your power requirements?

I would normally request two 13 amp supplies near to the stage area; one for lights and one for the PA system.  If we have an extended Band for your event or if you have hired the more extensive light system then we may require two additional power supplies but we will confirm when completing a quotation for your event.

Do you offer any additional services?

I am a classically trained musician and as such have a number of contacts in the industry.  Should you require any other music for your event such as ceremonial music, acoustic sets during dinner, additional/extended DJ service, microphone hire or additional lighting do let me know.  I also play with a string quartet and sing regularly for church services both as a soloist and with a choir should your Wedding or Event need music for a ceremony.
